This is Lake Baikal - our guide said we had a special opportunity to see the mountains on the other side of the lake - they aren't usually visible! There is not a road that goes all around the lake - there is a train on the other side - between the mountains and the lake. We felt the water - it was cold!
See the rock out in the middle of the lake? Actually it is at the mouth of the Angara River that runs out of the Lake. It is called Shaman rock - it is part of an old legend - and when people have committed sins, but say they are innocent ... they leave them on the rock overnight - if they are alive in the morning they are set free!!
Another picture of the mountains on the other side of the Lake - locals call it the sea because it is so large.
This is an actual submarine that was used to explore Lake Baikal ... I think it looks like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!!!
Small cannon that they still use to celebrate holidays!
Lake Baikal lighthouse in the background.
